How it works
- 1
Everyone fakes a definition
A real but ridiculously obscure word appears — like "petrichor" or "snollygoster". Each player secretly writes a definition that sounds like it came straight out of the dictionary.
- 2
Spot the true meaning
All the fake definitions are shuffled together with the real one. Can you tell genuine etymology from your friends' confident nonsense?
- 3
Score for smarts and trickery
Earn 1000 points for finding the real definition, plus 500 for every friend who believes your fake. The reveal shows the word's true story — and who fooled whom.
Why it's fun
🎓 Confidence beats knowledge
Nobody actually knows what a "zarf" is — so the win goes to whoever writes the most dictionary-sounding nonsense. Bluffing skills outscore vocabulary every time.
📖 You accidentally learn words
Every reveal tells the word's real story — the etymology, the history, the weird usage. You'll leave the game with insults and party facts nobody saw coming.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Guess the Definition free?
- Yes — completely free to play in your browser. No download, no signup needed. Just create a room and share the code.
- How many players do you need?
- 2 to 8 players per room. More players means more fake definitions to sift through — 4 to 6 is the sweet spot.
- Do I need a big vocabulary to win?
- Not at all — the words are obscure on purpose, so almost nobody knows them. Sounding convincing matters far more than being right.
- Can I play on my phone?
- Yes. The game works on any modern phone, tablet, or laptop browser, and everyone in the room can use a different device.
